The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing in the suo-motu case of the brutal rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, rescheduling it for November. Convicted in January, Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment, in a case that triggered nationwide protests. The Court continues monitoring related issues like protests by doctors and unauthorised absences. It formed a National Task Force last year, recommending states use existing laws to protect healthcare workers. The investigation was shifted from Kolkata police to CBI after High Court dissatisfaction. Senior advocate Karuna Nandy highlighted concerns over police interrogation of protesting doctors, urging timely hearing.
