Queen Elizabeth II was the world’s longest-serving monarch. She became queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in 1952. The queen died “peacefully” at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, the British royal family said. Under a long-standing plan known as “Operation London Bridge,” her death ushers in 10 days of national mourning. Her son Charles became king upon her death, and will be called King Charles III.
