Former minister Tan Sri Isa Samad, 76, will be imprisoned after the Federal Court today reinstated his six-year prison sentence and RM15.45 million fine for corruption.
A three-member bench led by Datuk Nordin Hassan made the ruling after allowing the prosecution’s appeal, overturning the Court of Appeal’s earlier decision to acquit him of all charges.
On Dec 14, 2018, Isa was charged with one count of criminal breach of trust and nine counts of receiving gratification involving more than RM3 million. The charges related to his approval of a proposal for Felda Investment Corporation Sdn Bhd (FICSB) to purchase a hotel in Kuching.
The offences were committed on the 49th floor of Menara Felda, Persiaran KLCC, between July 21, 2014, and Dec 11, 2015.
He was charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
On March 6, 2024, the Court of Appeal acquitted and discharged Isa of all charges after allowing his appeal.
