After walking in yesterday wearing a burqa for the second time in her career, One Nation senator Pauline Hanson has been censured and suspended from the chamber for seven days.
Penny Wong, who moved the motion, said in an address:
‘After what occurred yesterday, someone I’m close to this morning spoke about a conversation with her seven-year-old daughter last night and her daughter asked, “Mummy, do all Christians hate Muslims?” That summarised where we find ourselves and we see it again.’
It was at that point that Ralph Babet, the United Australia senator, was heard by this masthead and others in the Senate chamber to call out ‘I do’.
Babet later told Guardian Australia he had said: ‘I do, I hate radical Islam.’
