The Union Health Ministry is currently scrutinizing the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) practice of rejecting appeals from patients and their families against State Medical Councils’ decisions. Since 2020, the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) under NMC has rejected 162 patient appeals by June 2025, citing Section 30(3) of the NMC Act 2019, which limits appeals to medical practitioners only. However, critics argue this contradicts the 2002 Ethics Regulations that grant patients appeal rights.
