Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says there is no immediate need to suspend MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki while a special committee investigates allegations reported by Bloomberg.
He said the committee, chaired by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, will first scrutinise the matter in accordance with established procedures before any decision is made.
Anwar assured that the probe would be conducted transparently and cautioned against allowing the matter to disrupt the MACC’s intensified anti-corruption efforts.
He stressed that the investigation should not be misconstrued as an attempt to shield wrongdoing, adding that enforcement must continue without fear or favour.
Earlier, the Cabinet agreed to form the special committee to examine allegations linked to Azam’s past shareholdings in a financial services firm.
