New research has concluded that radiation from the sun would kill it off on the surface, but there are protected areas that could sustain microbial life.
The most likely place for life to exist would be a few centimetres below the surface, around ice that contains a small amount of dust – similar to what’s found in Alaska. This environment would allow organisms to harness energy from light for photosynthesis, while being protected from damaging ultraviolet radiation.
Images taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show several gullies on the planet that could produce the right conditions, with the white areas indicating where dusty ice is likely to occur.
Planetary ice expert Dr Aditya Khuller said “If we’re trying to find life anywhere in the universe today, martian ice exposures are probably one of the most accessible places we should be looking.”
