Kolkata Rape & Murder Case: Doctors Begin “Fast Unto Death” | Subscribe to Firstpost
The doctors in eastern India’s Kolkata, protesting over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the city’s RG Kar hospital, went on fast unto death on the evening of October 5. The protesting doctors have laid out nine demands, including swift justice for their deceased colleague, increased security at hospitals, removal of the state Health Secretary, and formation of task forces to ensure essential provisions for CCTV, among others. Furthermore, the doctors have demanded the recruitment of permanent women police personnel for the security of female doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers. The doctors had given a 24-hour deadline to the West Bengal state government for fulfilling their demands on October 4, after which they started their hunger strike.
