Lieutenant-General Datuk Azhan Md Othman, currently Armed Forces Headquarters Chief of Staff, has been appointed the 31st Army chief effective tomorrow, succeeding General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the appointment was endorsed at the 631st Armed Forces Council meeting on Nov 19 and received royal consent from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim on Dec 1.
An infantry officer, Azhan has held multiple command and staff roles, including leading the 24th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment, instructing at the Armed Forces Staff College, commanding Malbatt 850-6, and serving as 2nd Infantry Division commander.
He later became the Army Headquarters Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Training.
He is also a graduate of the French Joint Defence College and holds a strategic and defence studies diploma from Universiti Malaya.
Hafizuddeain was placed on immediate leave on Dec 27 amid an investigation, reportedly linked to military procurements.
The probe began on Dec 23 following a report lodged by activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin.
